Introduction
Acrospan props (also called Acrow props or adjustable steel props) are essential temporary supports used during slab construction. They hold up the formwork and wet concrete until it gains sufficient strength to support itself. Choosing the right props and using them correctly is critical for structural safety.
What Are Acrospan Props?
Acrospan props are adjustable steel tubes consisting of:
- **Outer tube** - Fixed length steel tube
- **Inner tube** - Telescoping tube for height adjustment
- **Adjustment pin** - For coarse height setting
- **Screw jack** - For fine height adjustment
- **Base plate** - For load distribution at bottom
- **Head plate** - For supporting formwork at top
Types of Props Available
Light Duty Props
- Height range: 1.7m to 3.1m
- Load capacity: Up to 1.5 tonnes
- Use: Single-storey slabs, light residential
Medium Duty Props
- Height range: 2.0m to 3.5m
- Load capacity: Up to 2.5 tonnes
- Use: Multi-storey residential, commercial
Heavy Duty Props
- Height range: 2.5m to 4.5m
- Load capacity: Up to 4.0 tonnes
- Use: Heavy slabs, industrial construction
Benefits of Acrospan Props
1. Adjustable Height
Fine-tune the support height precisely to match your slab level requirements.
2. High Load Capacity
Engineered to support heavy concrete loads safely during the curing period.
3. Quick Setup
Simple pin and screw mechanism means faster erection and striking.
4. Reusable
Steel construction allows multiple reuses across projects, making rental highly economical.
5. Compact Storage
Telescopic design means efficient storage and transport.
Usage Best Practices
Spacing Guidelines
- Standard slab (150mm thick): Props at 1.2m x 1.2m grid
- Thick slab (200mm+): Props at 1.0m x 1.0m grid or closer
- Always follow structural engineer's specifications
Installation Steps
1. Prepare firm, level base surface
2. Place base plates on sole boards if on soft ground
3. Set coarse height using adjustment pin
4. Fine-tune height using screw jack
5. Ensure vertical alignment using spirit level
6. Place head plates and position formwork
7. Check all connections before concrete pour
Striking (Removal)
1. Wait for minimum curing period as per engineer
2. Gradually release screw jacks
3. Remove props systematically from centre outward
4. Leave re-propping as specified
